DevOps: The Other Wise Man
Once upon a time, there lived 4 software developers….
One evening, 3 of those friends (& developers) were spending time discussing about their day to day delivery challenges — as faced in their respective organizations. Suddenly the 4th friend arrived, visibly disturbed he asked — guys, have you heard of “DevOps”? I am told this is the most happening thing around.
First Developer: Uh…we have been doing it for last few years, but we call it Scrum. It’s really cool!
Second Developer: You mean the approach to work in one team? Oh yes — we do it, absolutely! Our entire team gets over a call almost daily!
Third Developer: Dude — you all missed it! Guess what — I just came back from an awesome event on DevOps and many of our team members are even DevOps Certified.
Fourth Developer: Gosh! I am really behind on this! We simply follow the best practice of development. We work based on the simple philosophy of delivering small but incremental chunks of software — but with top quality. And to do this — we have multiple instances of Jenkins set & synced & their post build events trigger deployment based on the YAML DSL blueprints. And of course we do have test automation to confirm the quality. But honestly — I don’t know what it is called, apart from that fact that these are traditional good practices we follow since years. Also, we never bothered about certifications. But seems my career is ruined! Duh! (sob)
Suddenly there arrived a polished Consultant — who heard part of the discussion (well, he was handling too many things like — his reports, appointments, hot cup of Americano, multiple phones — talking to customers etc. all at the same time).
The Consultant: Gentlemen, I know all your problems! But thankfully — I have just the solution you need! My company will offer you training, certification and consultation towards becoming DevOps Professionals — so that all your problems could go away! Each day you miss, you are risking to lose your business in oblivion.
Question is: Which one of the developers do you wish to be (unless of course you are the consultant ;))?
