It’s easy to avoid walking into a place in this country where one would be the only white person, unfortunately. I’ve been the one white person in an establishment before, but I’m confident I would not have had to go too far out of my way to avoid that situation. When you’re a minority, this is much more difficult — to the point of being practically impossible.
The worst part is, in my mind, is the echo chamber effect — we sympathize and care and get riled up about this, but none of the transgressors will take this as a sign to change their ways. :-\
