The story of Java begins at Sun Microsystems in 1991. A team led by James Gosling, Mike Sheridan, and Patrick Naughton started a project called “Green Project” to develop a programming language for digital devices such as set-top boxes and interactive TVs.

James Gosling

Initially, the language was named “Oak” after the tree outside Gosling’s office. However, due to trademark issues, the name was changed later. In 1995, Sun Microsystems officially released the first version of Java, known as Java 1.0. The language was designed with the principle of “Write Once, Run Anywhere” (WORA), meaning that Java programs could run on any device with a Java Virtual Machine (JVM), regardless of the underlying hardware and software.
