Help Support My Work With A Patreon Pledge

In 2013, I wrote an article called “Why Work As We Know It May Be Immoral,” and it shot up to 10K views in a single day. Since then, my posts have been read countless times, debated on Reddit, and shared on social media by some of my heroes, including David Graeber and Scott Santens.

Seeing the positive responses gave me hope that there is a growing movement in this country to redefine work, create a more sensible economy, and provide a living wage to all Americans.

Over the past two years, I’ve written dozens of essays on debt resistance, the “sharing economy,” intentional communities, minimalism, and more. I’ve presented workshops at simple living conferences and hosted a discussion group on universal basic income.

But throughout that time, I’ve had something hanging over my head: the need to make a living. Most of my writing has been unpaid; sales of my e-books bring in barely a few hundred bucks each year; I’ve had to take on a variety of temp and freelance gigs to get by. At my most recent job, they literally brought in machines that made my position obsolete.

I’ve seen both sides of this new, precarious economy: the promise of technology to make our lives easier, and the stubborn resistance of our employers and our governments to adapt to the changing needs of the work force. I worry that, for many people of my generation, a sense of stability, of security, and of home and family will be permanently out of our grasp.

With your support, I can keep at my mission: researching and writing articles on co-operative living and basic income, presenting workshops in Portland and elsewhere in the world, and self-publishing my work in paperback form to reach as many off-line readers as possible.

I’m not looking for a free ride; I want to work for you. If you choose to support me, you’ll be the first to hear about new projects, get free copies of upcoming books, and have a say in what I work on next. With your help, I can make writing & publishing my full-time mission.
