SEO optimizations for your tumblr blog
beginners guide
It is widely agreed that wordpress offers you much better tools to optimise your blog to be scraped by google bots and show up higher in the search results.
However, there is one hack that you can help your boost the ranking of your tumblr blog on search results, and show your blog above the heavy weights like quora, ,medium and angel list.
To do so, you have to first understand that three important elements that matter when google scrapes a website
b. the title of the blog — this is not the heading of the page but the title as defined in the html, dont sweat if you dont know html. you will learn how to find it and change it below.
c. the description of the blog — again this is not the content of the page, but a description “tag” that is associate with each website (explained in detail below).
Your most important keyword, the word that you want your blog to be based on should appear in all three of the above.
Taking example of my blog, my blog is optimised for my name “saurabh mandar”. When i search for my name this is what i get —

Here, my name in capitals is the “title” of my blog, my name is also the url of my blog and the content below is what i added as the “description” for my blog (in my case I use my latest blog as the description).
So how can you do this? It’s easy —
On the top right corner of the page, you will see two options “Customize” and “Dashboard” (make sure you are signed in to your tumblr account). Click customize, and a nice window will pop-open from the left.
b. At the top, there is a nice little button that says “edit html”. hit it.

Things might look daunting now if you have never seen a HTML file before, but ignore everything and search for <head> (you can hit command + F to open a search bar).
Right under where you see <head> (should be towards the top of the page) paste this code with your own edits (else your blog will show my name!).

If you want your lastest blog post to be shown under the url on search as the description, just copy past the {block….{title} or you can enter a custom summary (the shaded part just underneath that. You can use the “meta description” tag to add more information about you that helps google provide more contextual information about you in certain types of search queries.
c. Now the other important part, the title of your blog itself. Once you are done with the above, hit the back button on top left. You will come back to main customize section, and see a little block that says “Title”. Just add the title of your blog. Make sure that your title has the key words you are trying to optimize your blog for.

d. There is one last trick to ensure your blog is fully optimised for google, that is the Google Authorship.
Google recently updated its search engine results to show higher in search the results that are somehow part of the google universe (thing youtube, google+, blogger). What google authorship does is to relate your google+ profile with your blog (that is why you see my photo in the search results) and that makes it a higher priority result in a search query with my name.
It is very easy to set up and you can find the instructions here — https://plus.google.com/authorship
Using these nitty tricks I was able to push my blog rankings in the search results from the third page to the first page and above the links for my posts on quora, my Facebook profile and my twitter profile.
Feel free to ask any questions that you might have, and hope this helps boost your blog seo.
