Who among us is Lord Ram anyway?

मैंने महसूस किया है उस जलते हुए रावण का दुःख

जो सामने खड़ी भीड़ से बारबार पूछ रहा था…..

— “तुम में से कोई राम है क्या?”

The above words translate to English as — “I sensed the sadness of the burning Ravana, who is helplessly asking the crowd just one question: Is there a Ram among you?”

One of my friends sent me the above words as a WhatsApp forward. The words were so powerful in its spirit and meaning that I paused for a longer while and thought over it. Every year in India during Dussehra, we burn the effigies of Ravana to drive away the evil from our society. But looking into the increasing level of intolerance, moral policing, atrocities against women, child rape, mob lynching for meat possession etc. etc.; are we even deserved to burn the effigies of Ravana? To kill Ravana or the demon king, we have to kill the demons and evils inside us. Lets not follow our age old religious traditions just symbolically, but rather do it in the right spirit. As they say, charity begins at home! I and you should start it by wiping out our own evils inside us… Amen!
