My Fat Friend, thank you for this. Thank you for exposing your horrible treatment for the rest of us. It’s appalling that people feel they have the right to make insulting comments (e.g., the person who commented on this thread about diabetes — she didn’t get the message, apparently).

I have a special needs child. During the Senate’s fight to take away her healthcare, I have commented on several public fora with her picture and her story. Some people have responded that if I couldn’t pay for her medical care I shouldn’t have given birth, that I must be a terrible mother to have to put her on Medicaid. (Her medical care is astronomically expensive.) The worst of the worst feel free to comment on the internet. The illusion of anonymity gives even somewhat normal people freedom to release their inner vitriol. It’s the ones that comment in real life, though, that are truly despicable. The ones who give my beautiful child dirty looks, the ones who give you unsolicited medical advice. I feel sorry for them.

Good luck to you. Thank you for writing about your struggles. I hope it gets through to someone — maybe even Marti, the commenter here. Hugs, My Fat Friend. ❤
