Saving Jaws

The great white shark is one of the most feared species that resides in the oceans. This shark species has a big reputation for being dangerous, mostly thanks to the movie Jaws, but that’s besides the point. However, little is known about the behavior and tendencies this shark has. This is because the great white is unable to be in captivity, so little research is able to be done. It can way up to 4,000 pounds and measure up to 20 feet in length. It also has a nice set of teeth, 300 to be exact. The great white is currently at the vulnerable level on the extinction risk scale.

Why Should You Care About The Great White?
The great white is the top predator in the ocean food chain. Without it, many fish numbers could increase. This shark species keeps the ecosystem healthy and fish numbers at a good proportion. This isn’t something every predator fish can do.

Why Are They On The Extinction Risk Scale?
The great white has been hunted by man for years. Besides orcas, and larger sharks, man is the only predator to the great white. This means, we are the only reason for the great white numbers going down. The shark is hunted mainly for its teeth and fins. In sport fishing, the great white is also seen as a trophy. Another reason is becoming entangled in fishing nets, as well as commercial fishing.
What Are Some Conservation Efforts?
WWF has tagged most great whites that migrate to and from the Gulf of CA. By tagging the sharks, they are able to monitor behavioral patterns as the shark travels throughout the ocean. This will help by learning how to make a more effective plan on how to arrange the protected areas. By arranging protected areas, sharks will be safe from netting and tourism.

How Can You Help?
-Buy shark safe products. Don’t buy any makeup products and health products that have oils and cartilage pieces from sharks in them.
-Do not eat shark and reduce your seafood consumption.
-Donate to shark conservation organizations (Shark Trust, Shark Alliance, WildAid)
-Educate yourself more on the great white and then educate others.
