The Japanese word Genchi Genbutsu is often translated as “collecting facts and data at the actual site of the work or problem.” or “question things directly”.

It means that once you have a problem, you need to identify its roots by doing your own research to find an answer.

This typically means finding out where the problem came from and who is responsible for it.

It can also mean trying something different until you reach success.

Sometimes The Best Place To Start May Not Be Your Original Place Of Difficulty

For example, you might have a problem with tardiness at work, after you arrive you find yourself staring at the face of the manager for half an hour because he is late.

You might think to yourself ‘Who made him late? What should I do about it?.’ The first thing to do is look for other people who are late, which means looking at their faces rather than just their backs. What if I start with the people who aren’t late to work? This might change my perception of what the problem actually is.
