Hire fast, Fire even faster.
Read the news about Housing.com planning to cut 1/5 th of their staff. Its not shoking or didn’t felt anything wrong about it. Housing is one of the hot startup in indian market. They have grown to ceazy numbers in last three years. May be this is the right time to slow down and look back.
The old hiring mantra for startups was Hire Slow Fire Fast but with growing hype around startups has changed it to Hire Fast Fire even Faster. Startups are growing like anything, from 10 people in first month to 1000 in first two three years. You have to support the growth and don’t have enough time to be spent hiring.
Additionally hiring processes are broken. Interview systems are broken. Hiring managers don’t want to shell out tenth of a standards and they expect candidates to solve math problems, write the code in hour or two or know everyting in growth hacking or throw some cool terms about accounts before even looking at his face.
In result candidates have learned to game the broken system. They know the tricks like “fake it till you make it”. They know how win hackathons. They know how to burn on marketing campaigns and then where to get that paper growth with k following every few digits.
The end reault is layoffs in first few years.
PS: This is my first post. May be I am wrong, but still they are my views.
