PROLOGUE

“Fear kills more dreams, than failure ever will!”

“Hello sir, am in my pre-final year of my college, and willing to find some good SDE internships around.”

“Well there are so many organisations and companies who do hire for interns, right? Why not apply right-away!”

“But I was looking for something in abroad, just to extend my wings and see what working in an abroad company feels like.”

“Well if you want to mix abroad, and work culture & diversity, Mercari Japan might be the best place to go forward.”

“Oh really is it? Let me look out for it!”

This blog serves as a continuation of the discussion regarding college student internships, specifically on the subject of how to secure them and what to expect. For those in their freshman or sophomore year of college, I have previously provided a blog post on the topic of how and where to begin seeking internships within startups. This resource provides information on obtaining hands-on experience working on real-world projects. If you fall into this category of students, I recommend referring to the following blogs for further guidance:-

This current blog is directed towards students in advanced stages of their academic journey, specifically those who are in their pre-final or final year. It is geared towards those who are seeking valuable experience within the domain of software development abroad internships.

MERCARI JAPAN

So, there’s this Japanese e-commerce company called Mercari, Inc. It was created in 2013 and their main deal is the Mercari marketplace app. Basically, you can use this app to swiftly buy and sell items straight from your smartphone. It’s hugely popular in Japan ’cause it’s easy to use and has this cool anonymous shipping system where you can send stuff from local convenience stores through agreements with Yamato Transport and Japan Post. Oh, and did I mention that every month, people are making transactions worth over JPY 10 billion on the platform? Yup, it’s Japan’s biggest community-powered marketplace.

Beyond the offerings of Mercari, what has truly captured my admiration is the cultural ethos at the organization, which extends to both its employees and consumers. The company has fostered a unique culture, which is manifested in all aspects of its operations. This culture has evidently imbued in the employees who are keen on delivering impeccable services that resonate with the company’s ethos. In the same breath, the consumers are also privy to the same culture and have enjoyed pleasant experiences when engaging with Mercari. Such values-based and customer-centric cultures are indicative of well-rounded organizations that aspire to build brands that exceed mere product offerings.

They stand for “Go Bold | All for One | Be a Pro”

GO BOLD

As per company’s one of the core values which states “Go Bold”, it can have numerous meanings, and also in some discussions, they even ask us how we would like to interpret the meaning out of it. But w.r.t them, to achieve big success, you gotta think outside the box and try new things over and over again. Copying others won’t get you anywhere. By taking on tough challenges, Mercari has gone from strength to strength. They don’t shy away from change — they actively seek it out and experiment with different ideas. They recognize failure as just another step towards winning, which is why they analyze their mistakes and take note of their lessons, sharing them with everyone, no matter the outcome. By doing this, the entire company can learn from their past experiences and use them to drive fresh innovation.

ALL FOR ONE

At Mercari, they work together as a team to achieve their mission. They know that they can accomplish more as a group than as individuals, even if it means stretching beyond their areas of expertise. Each person has different skills, but they all show trust and respect for one another. By doing that, they can achieve amazing things together that wouldn’t be doable alone. Those in positions of responsibility take ownership over making decisions in a timely manner. We commit to the final decision, even if we disagree with it.

BE A PRO

At Mercari, they all got the top-notch professional skills to do the job, but they’re not just any old bunch of people. They hold themselves to a strong set of ethics and behave in a responsible way, both on and off the job. When they get together to discuss things, they always keep it professional and bring up their ideas in a positive, constructive manner. They’re super driven to learn and grow, even if it means facing some challenges along the way. They remain committed to take action rather than simply giving criticism.

WHAT THESE CORE VALUES MEAN TO YOU?

Providing an outline of the three prominent core values that encompass the company’s vision is crucial because all the employees involved embody these values on their journey. While the above information is the professional perspective of the business’s aspirations, each individual is entitled to their own interpretation. It is imperative to contemplate how these values are applicable not only within the professional domain but also on a personal level. Japan is renowned for its heritage and culture, and the company reflects these ideals.

EPILOGUE

All these values and insights meant for you to grab interest on the company, and see if their values really excites you. And if that’s the case, then the next blog would be crucial for you where I would share my whole personal experience I had from the interview till completion of the Internship. Dive in!
