Water is sufficient for consumption and food preparation is essential to human health. Estimates of the daily minimum between 1.8 to 5 liters of water are consumed daily per person (Gleick, 1996). Nevertheless, water use rises in during exercise, in warm areas, and during pregnancy lactation, too. A current WHO assessment suggested 7.5 liters per person per day, minimum, to satisfy most people’s requirements in most situations.

According to current estimates, 2.6 billion people need access to proper sanitation, while 1.1 billion people require improved water supply (Unicef, 2019). In the past, increased hygiene and a decline in sickness have been linked to the direct delivery of piped water to the home. However, there is a rising awareness that water distribution systems are subject to infiltration and contamination and may contribute to pandemic waterborne disease as living standards have increased and water infrastructures have aged. In vast parts of Asia, where an estimated 675 million people lack access to adequate drinking water sources, this issue is still quite problematic (Unicef, 2019).

Water is a vital resource, and all residents have a basic human right to obtain clean drinking water. For the health and welfare of people, drinking water quality is a crucial problem. Only 20% of Pakistan’s population has access to clean water, according to a survey by Pakistan’s National Water Policy (PCRWR). Due to the lack of clean and healthy drinking water sources, the remaining 80% of the population must use contaminated water. The primary source of water in the majority of Pakistani cities is the groundwater, which is contaminated with several viruses, bacteria, and protozoa that result in 2.5 million fatalities from the endemic diarrheal disease every year (Nawaz, 2018).

Health Effects of Unsafe Water

Human health is severely impacted by unsafe water. According to studies on community health, poor drinking water quality is responsible for around 50% of diseases and 40% of fatalities in Pakistan. Diseases like cholera, trachoma, schistosomiasis, and helminthiasis are more prevalent where there is a lack of access to water and sanitary facilities (Fida, 2022). In addition to illness, unclean environments and contaminated water can result in gastrointestinal disorders that impair nutrient absorption and cause malnutrition. For kids, these impacts are particularly noticeable. In Pakistan, 11% of all annual deaths among children under the age of five are caused by diarrheal illnesses.

Water Availability

7% of Punjab’s rural population relies on rivers and dug wells for water. Of all the provinces, it appears that Punjab has the best water supply system. In Sindh, this ratio is 24%, and locals are using unprotected sources to obtain their water. About 46% and 72%, respectively, of rural communities in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) and Baluchistan use water from the surface, and dug well are about 46% and 72%, respectively.

A little step towards safe water by Saylani welfare Trust International

Saylani Welfare International is one of the biggest NGOs in Pakistan and aims to install 1,200 RO WATER PLANTS across the country. Saylani was founded in May 1999 by renowned spiritual and religious scholar Maulana Bashir Ahmed Farooqui Sahab and was based on the principles of ending the cycle of poverty and easing the financial struggles of the underprivileged.

Saylani has been working very hard to assist people in whatever manner possible for the well-being of people in need. Saylani is best known for providing 3 times free meals to around 200,000 people daily across Pakistan. It’s only 1 out of 60+ areas where this NGO is serving humanity. Saylani has also been involved in the healthcare industry. Through the Saylani Medical and Diabetic Centre, we assist individuals undergoing hepatitis, diabetes, and other laboratory tests, all free of cost. From free schools to high-quality IT, business education, and vocational training, textile training for women with job guarantee. Saylani is striving to make a positive impact on people’s lives. This is only possible because of people like you who trust Saylani and support through donations.

2022 was a year that affected millions of Pakistan with the disastrous flood in many parts of the country. Our crews had already begun their work in the areas of the nation affected by the flood. Our main focus is on ensuring that people have shelter, meals to survive, and access to clean drinking water, which is crucial for halting the spread of epidemics, particularly cholera, which spreads rapidly in flood-affected areas when water supplies are compromised.

More than 314 various forms and sizes of water filter plants have been installed so far by Saylani, this includes 73 in Sindh province, 237 units in Punjab, 2 units in Baluchistan, and 2 units in different parts of KPK. These numbers do not include a Bore well and Hand pump, which totals at 377.

More than 400,000 people can now get clean water daily from these plants. Our water filtration department’s primary objective is to install 1,200 R.O. water treatment facilities to provide people with clean drinking water across Pakistan.

“O Messenger of Allah, My mother has died. Shall I give charity on her behalf?” The Prophet said, “Yes.” I said, “Which charity is the best?”

The Prophet said, “A drink of water.”
