Why I am building a company that will last longer than me.
Its bit emotional and not everyone will resonate with me. Building a company is like raising a child, it needs lot of effort and time. One works very hard over the years to grow it and take it to a stage. Founders should feel proud of being awesome to create such a great company, but what will happen when founders won’t be around, who will take care of that and do founders really care!.
Some founders are emotional about what they created, they want to see it in good hands even if they are not around and this seems right to me, if a founder spent golden years of his life creating something he loves, he surely don’t want to see it vanish or faded away, its then not just about the founder or the company being a vehicle for founder’s high economic and social status but now the company has its own identity, its has a culture and many other people depends on it and care about it.
Preparing the company for succession is easier said than done, the feeling of ownership and oneness has to be injected in chosen few who can take up the challenge and run the company as their own and follow founder’s vision and values and founder can rest assured that the company would be in good hands.
I am sure founders don’t want there creations, there hard work die when they can not look after it, they want it to be healthy and operating properly even if it don’t benefit them at all, its like there child and they want it to grow and achieve heights. Founder’s creation is there part which they would left behind after them and if they can see it from up there they would be happy and content to see it in good health.
There are many examples of such initiatives by great leaders like Steve Jobs, Steve Jobs made sure that Apple runs effectively in his absence, he worked closely with his executive team and trained them to take right decisions in light of Apple’s vision and values, he worked more coherently with Tim Cook to make him understand the true Apple and challenges he would face after him and guided him in situations, apart from that Steve created a culture of creativity and innovation in Apple and to immerse new hires in the apple culture and make them aware of apple history and values he created Apple university in 2008 with help of Joel Podolny, then the deal of Yale School of Management, its not unique about Apple or Steve Jobs but its done by many other leaders also and it make sense to me.
I am also in process of building an organization and I have been trying hard to create a culture which can sustain after me and keep creating value for the customers! Please share your thoughts.
