Human society changes the environment to satisfy human demands and expectations. That means human society brutalizes Nature. Were it not for our ability to control Nature, or at least to control and moderate its threat to humans, human society would consist of small groups of people living in caves, in forests and on open land, generally exposed to threats that would kill us in a heartbeat.

Nothing about human society is “natural.” Not farms. Not ranches. Not cities and towns. Not roads. Not airports. Not railroads. Nothing. We re-make the world to suit ourselves. It’s always been that way, and it will continue that way.
