The legal deposit of your book with the BnF is compulsory from the moment you professionalize your approach. That is to say from the moment you leave your private circle. You have probably already wondered what could be the use of an ISBN number, if not to have your book accepted in salons, libraries or bookstores? And be aware that it is also essential to deposit and index your book with the BnF , the National Library of USA.

There is apparently a possibility of depositing a book without ISBN at the BnF, with the old method which required you to buy a book to send it by post with the appropriate form. But what interests us here is the online filing service.

How to deposit your book at the National Library of USA?
First of all, to deposit your book at the BnF, you need an ISBN number. To find out how to obtain your ISBN, read our article on the subject: How to obtain an ISBN number?

You can now follow the deposit of your books on the BnF website, from their reception to their description in the catalog and in the French National Bibliography. To do this, go to this URL , register, and the BnF will send you a username and password within 72 hours.

Please note, you must prepare your book, therefore revise it so that it complies with the requirements of the BnF: (extract from the regulations)

“The publisher must send the Legal Deposit of Books two copies of the book at the latest on the day of its circulation. The deposit is reduced to a single copy if the circulation is less than three hundred copies.

Before sending the book, the publisher will ensure that the mandatory information appears on the printed documents subject to legal deposit:

the name (or company name) and address of the publisher;
the name (or company name) and address of the printer (country of production when printing abroad);
the date of completion of the draw;
the mention of the ISBN and possibly the ISSN;
the price in euros;
the mention “Legal deposit” followed by the month and year of execution of the deposit.
These mentions are usually written on the last page of the book Named the world of Book, or on the page preceding the title page. “

All taxes included price. And you will have to stick to this price (see law on the price of books : no more than 5% discount on this price fixed once and for all)

You will send the book with a copy of the declaration. Remember: you are a self-publisher, therefore an editor. Once your book is registered, it enters the OPALE database, and typing your name or title in a search engine will bring back all the basic information to find it. On the other hand, libraries and bookstores also find information in this database. And finally, this is good proof of prior art in the event of a dispute…
