I was struggling with something to write. Staring at the blank screen felt daunting. She was taunting me. Laughing at me like the possessed Stay Puft Marshmallow Man in Ghostbusters.

It was crippling. Every writers’ Kryptonite. What Stephen King refers to as the blank page. And you must not come lightly to the blank page. I agree with you Mr. King.

It’s like looking out into a vast wilderness. Absolute stillness. Bleak. You’re alone. In the distance a wolf howls.

“I’m never gonna find the words,” you think to yourself.

Suddenly lightening strikes. You remember not one but two voicemails saved from your dear friend. He called the other day. The reason there’s two is because the first one was so long that my phone cut him off.

He called back to finish it. It’s what we do. Leave long-winded voicemails. I started it. It’s turned into a game of “can you top this?”

We don’t live in the same city so it’s important to stay in touch. Also, what a wonderful time to procrastinate! Yes! I’ll call Omar.

That guy puts me in a great mood. Always in the right headspace after talking to him.

He picks up the phone. Right away he says, “I’m driving. My wife’s in the car and you’re on speaker.” A true bro. Always looking out. Not that I’m in the habit of saying inappropriate things but… shit happens.

I launch into some G-rated stuff about a wonderful experience I had using my food processor for the first time. I love to cook. Never used one before. It was a big deal.

He tells me about the new job he landed. How they’re en route to a family party. Fun times are about to be had. Good talk.

“We’re pulling up to their house.”

“Ok man! Enjoy the party.” We hang up. Life’s peachy again.

The moral is when you feel stuck, pick up the phone and call someone you care about. Even if you’re not sure that you should. Even if you think you might be bothering them. Even if you’re just procrastinating.

It’s the greatest high there is. Better than any substance you can put in your body. Pick up the phone. Call someone today and tell them your life is better because they’re in it.

You cannot lose another life than the one you’re living now, or live another one than the one you’re losing. -Marcus Aurelius

Have no regrets. Love unabashedly. You only get one.
