F*ck New Year’s Resolutions
You know what, make this New Year special, just don’t do it. Please, I beg you, just forget about making any life changing resolutions. You know it’s bullshit and I know it’s full of shit. You probably had a wonderful evening, drank to much alcohol, went to bed at 3 or 4 in the morning, had a burger after all that, slept until noon, and now you’re like, “Yeah, I should take a step back and think about what I did last year and what I plan to do for the next one.” And you’re thinking, well I didn’t do as much exercice as I should have done. I watched way too much TV shows on Netflix and didn’t read all those books I wanted to. I spent too much on booze and didn’t focus enough on learning this new guitar solo. But this year, holy crap, this year will be different! This year you’ll change all that. This year you will make it unforgettable.
Well let me tell you something, that’s not the way it works. I mean, yeah, good for you, you gave yourself the time to think on what happened last year and set new objectives for the next 12 months, but why did you wait this January 1st to think about all that? A lot can happen in 12 months and it’s easy to lose focus on those objectives. Each day must be taken seriously to achieve your goals. Ask yourself, what did you make today to make it happen? If this New Year objective is about making a trip in Europe for 2 months and you need to save all that money to pay for it, just stop your daily Starbucks coffee. Stop spending on booze in those 5 à 7. And plan ahead. Do weekly follow up with your budget just to make sure you’re on target. Believe me, you won’t be disappointed by the results.
Sure it’s hard. You have to make choices to achieve your goals. EVERYDAY. Not just once a year but each time your fellow colleagues ask you to have a beer after work and you have to tell them no. For me it’s a win-win situation: you save money, and you can take this free time to read/exercise/learn or whatever else YOU truly want to do.
Make each day count and always keep in mind what’s your goals. Don’t wait January to write down your resolutions, but instead make micro-daily-resolutions that will help you toward this big goal.
The One Thing by Gary Keller is a really good start to help you in that direction. It helped me a lot for my personal and professional objectives and hope it will also help you achieving those resolutions.
