Isn’t this exactly why we have always had and always needed a strong state? To put it another way, here is where the libertarianism of a lot of the net falls flat. Yes we need empowered individuals to avoid an overweening state, but we also need a strong state to protect individuals from the mob. I can’t think of examples — yet — in which people have died because of this kind of thing, and there are plenty of people dead because of abuse of state power. But then there have been states for millennia while the internet is only a few decades old. Give it time….
