Actually, there are other ways. The original plan was for the pipeline to go north around Bismarck, crossing the river only once. The current plan goes south of Bismarck, crosses the river at the reservoir, Indian burial grounds, and several tributaries. The reason the original plan was shelved? ‘Environmental reasons’ such as local opposition from largely white suburban folks (Not in my backyard).
