I’m sure the White House ideologues are looking for war but most of the Pentagon will be looking at maps and saying “Oh NO!”

US land forces can be gathered only in Turkey, Iraq, Afghanistan and Pakistan. Turkmenistan Armenia and Azerbaijan are Russian fiefdoms. Both Pakistan and Turkey have firm policies against letting large concentrations of US forces gather on their land. In Iraq and Afghanistan the troops might as well have targets on painted on their backs.

Next there is the problem of shipping in the Shatt al Arab, the Persian Gulf and the Straits of Hormuz. Essentially any war would shut down all shipments of oil by those waterways for months and probably years.

Then there is distance, Iran is 3 times the size of Iraq and Tehran is 2x as far from the border as Baghdad. Social cohesion in Iran is excellent due to the successful democracy that has run the country for more than 20 years. The regime is is technologically sophisticated and knows that the US will be limited to using tactics similar to those used in Iraq.

Frankly it is a SNAFU waiting to happen
