Is It ADHD Or Is Your Child Gifted?

Is your son or daughter is somewhat overactive? Do both you and your child’s gifted school teacher, in the Chicago suburbs, think that they may have ADHD (Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder)? Then you might want to think about something for a moment. A number of doctors, psychologists, and teachers contend that ADHD is oftentimes sim-diagnosed or over-diagnosed. Many children during their developmental years have displayed several characteristics or symptoms of ADHD.

But beware, those characteristics or symptoms can also be confused with those of other conditions such as anxiety, depression, and minor seizures. More importantly, they are often mistaken for gifted seng. In reality, it is oftentimes very difficult to distinguish between ADHD and gifted seng. Just keep in mind that the gifted child can also appear to be distracted, impulsive, inattentive, and yes hyperactive, as well. In most cases, this is due to a lack of stimulation on the child’s behalf.

While it is totally possible for a child to have ADHD and be gifted as well, you should always exhibit caution whenever you’re seeking a diagnosis. The primary treatment regimen for ADHD is usually prescription medication which by all rights is completely unnecessary and potentially harmful. Conversely, doesn’t it make more sense to treat a child that suffers with a petrochemical imbalance by providing more meaningful yet challenging gifted school curriculum in Chicago suburbs?

Like Occam’s Razor*, sometimes the best solution or treatment is the simplest one. In the case of ADHD vs. gifted seng, it’s better to consider the least pathological reason or explanation for the behavior that a child exhibits first. This should be considered before prescribing medication. The solution for parents of highly intellectual children is to take them to a professional who is familiar with ADHD and gifted seng. Ask for advice and to evaluate them for diagnosis and treatment.

There are some signs or symptoms that could indicate whether or not your child’s hyperactivity and inattentiveness are due to ADHD or giftedness which includes:

• Answers questions correctly or provide relevant comments if prompted to do so, even though it appeared that they weren’t paying attention to what was being discussed or taught in the gifted school classroom in Chicago suburbs

• Concentrating on intellectually challenging activities for extended periods of time (does not include playing video games or watching TV)

• When working on assignments or tasks that fall below their level of ability, they tend to be disruptive and/or overactive

If you are unsure about whether or not your child’s first diagnosis was accurate, it pays to consider a second opinion.
