March for Science Chicago Announces Speaker: Karen Weigert

The March for Science Chicago is honored to include in its speaking program, Karen Weigert on April 22, 2017.

Karen served as the first chief sustainability officer for the City of Chicago from 2011 to 2016. During her time at the City, Chicago was named the most sustainable large community in North America and was selected as the Earth Hour Capital of the US. The City of Chicago launched programs like Divvy, Greencorps Chicago Youth Program, Retrofit Chicago and Solar Express which allows homeowners to get solar installation permits in a single day.

Before she joined the City, Karen was a producer and writer for the documentary film Carbon Nation which looks at solutions to climate change. She now serves as a Senior Fellow for The Chicago Council on Global Affairs where Karen focuses on climate, energy and sustainability in cities around the world.

Based on her experiences Karen understands how science impacts every aspect of the city whether it’s job creation, clean energy, transportation, water, healthy food, or climate change. She knows that a Chicago that values safety, security, and quality of life must be a city that values the role of science. Karen will speak to her experiences using science to transform our city and what we can all do to contribute to a more sustainable city.
