What do we learn in The Broken Circle?

Lieutenant Spock in command and about to steal the ship!

The second season of Strange New Worlds picks up the pieces left at the end of season 1 but focuses most of its attention on Spock’s current inability to control his emotions, on La’an Noonien-Singh’s personal mission to reunite a lost child with her parents, after surviving a Gorn attack, and on the relationship and back history of Dr M’Benga and Nurse Chapel.

The story also picks up the Klingons, revealing some of the scars left over from the Federation-Klingon war (depicted in Discovery season 1) and showing us Klingon’s that look more like the Klingon’s we remember from the movies and TNG-era shows.

The Klingon’s return!

What makes this an interesting episode is the fact that Captain Pike is missing for most of the episode, having decided to personally intervene in the case against his Number One, Una Chin-Riley. His absence leaves Lieutenant Spock in charge of the Enterprise. Uncharacteristically for Spock he decides to steal the Enterprise to help Noonien-Singh.

This more emotional Spock appears to be a season-long arc for the character so we can presumably look forward to seeing…
