hhmm, as a mixed race white appearing person, my main take away is how much mixed folks who don’t know their own heritage or want to ignore institutional injustice want to make excuses for racism and cultural appropriation and how if they are uneducated about their own heritage they will make even more excuses for cultural appropriation. Almost every paragraph was I know this is bad, I think is profiting other cultures, I know this exist BUT BUT BUT “we can’t be mad at them, we can’t say anything and we can’t stop it”. At the same time the author whines about they don’t want anyone treat them as aribiter of cultural appropriation but isn’t that exactly what she is doing if abet doing it for her white folks and none of the rest. Also the concept that racism is just ignorance has been proven false again and again. White dude who LOVE China and it’s culture and especially it’s women can have been very well educated about China even proclaiming themselves EXPERTS (let me think the last time I met a Chinese man who was an expert on the UK complete with a nice English wife and apology making daughter). No it is very easy to love the culture and hate the people and even those who claim to be it’s ambassadors are often shown even if only once they past to just be good old fashioned colonizers. It’s funny that in piece that’s all about not guilting cultural appropriation the author shares her own desire to appropriate Africian hairstyles specifically because she is so uncomfortable with her actual non-white heritage and skin. Of course through out the British Empire POC groups from one country were brought to other countries to oppress another POC groups, See Sri Lanka, See South Africa and other countries. The fact that this author is doing the same thing seems to be lost on her. For not wanting to be the token Chinese person, she certainly has no problem being the token mixed race person who is ready to make excuses for white folks and others practicing cultural appropriation. I hope you take them time to stop being willfully ignorant about your heritage and the cultures that your family has been influenced by and stop making excuses.
