I did not see this coming…

Wow. Today Comcast raised their monthly data caps to 1TB for areas of the country with active caps in place. A terabyte per month is a pretty healthy dose of bandwidth, and should alleviate most people’s concerns for now. When 4K video is really a thing that gets streamed across the Internet, it won’t be nearly enough, but we aren’t there yet.

I was either wildly wrong about Comcast’s motives with their data cap testing across the U.S., or they rapidly figured out they wanted to cough up a more palatable number in light of recent scrutiny on the topic by the Wall Street Journal, and much more importantly, the FCC.

Whatever the case, it’s good news, and I’m more than happy to eat crow on this one. I’ve monitored my family’s Comcast bandwidth usage for awhile, and post-tv cable cutting, the news hasn’t been great if either of the older 250GB or 300GB caps were left in place. I suspect a lot of other families are like me, and that a terabyte of bandwidth per month will be a big help.
