I recently became really sensitive to women and men referring to teenage and older women as “girls” after Mayim Bialik (Amy from Big Bang) posted this https://youtu.be/qHH3lhYwqcY
It created quite the stir, with men and women criticising her thoughts. I personally have no problem with being referred to as a boy despite being 31, if it’s someone I’m familiar with. If I’m not, then I can’t judge with what intent they’re using it. To demean mean? Or an attempt to build rapport?
A guy is definitely male. Guys, from my personal social exposure can be a group of men, mixed or just women as you pointed out with friends.
I guess the takeaway is… amongst company you don’t know, which is always the case in public Chatrooms – err on the side of caution. Be neutral, as far as your knowledge allows.
BUT I do believe men and women have a responsibility to understand the social exposures others have had. A word in your world may not have the same connotations as that word in theirs. So before you fly off the hook and judge others based on your connotations of a word… think about it. Perhaps by being referred to as a guy isn’t a form of ignorance on their part – but on yours too.
