The potential for our scientific understanding of creation to inspire awe and wonder is what captivates many of us about the mysteries that scientific progress has revealed.

I feel like the opening paragraphs here are saying that science is being limited in its explanatory power by the limits placed on it by rationality and materialism, terms which I am understanding as essentially meaning logic and physical evidence, respectively. Perhaps I have misunderstood.

Isn’t the rationalism and materialism we see in science the reason that it has such explanatory and inspirational power? Is it dogmatic to expect that science make evidence-based claims, and test them to determine their validity?
