I’ve done the freelance dance for about 8 years, only full time for about 2 of that. I don’t have the temperament for depending on freelance income for our family of four; too much on the line to risk a dry season.

I made the shift into product development, much like others. In 2008, I made an iOS app that did slightly better than break-even. I definitely didn’t recoup my personal time cost, but I learned a ton and landed a killer job as a result.

In 2010, I made an Android app that did pretty well. Knowing what I know now about app distribution, it could have done much better.

I made a web app in 2012 with a friend. Lots of people loved the idea and the execution. Not as many loved it enough to pay $20/year to use it. It’s hard to sell a consumer-focused paid web app, even one that makes life easier for people.

In 2013, I started a community for new web developers; people who were just beginning to learn to code. It was fun and I met lots of great people, but I couldn’t find a way to monetize it well-enough to make it work long term.

In 2015, I made an iOS app that people love and is actually pretty useful. I use it regularly myself, which is a good sign. It’s not a world-changer or anything, just a practical little tool.

Also in 2015, I made a web app and turned it into a company. It’s done well and is growing. I believe this one is a long term winner, but it will take time to build. I’m learning a lot in the mean time.

We’re starting to build a new thing for 2016. It will be a sister product to our main flagship training product. Like any new thing, it’s exciting.

But I know that anything we build will need time to grow the right way. We want to grow purposefully and serve our customers well, meeting their feature and support needs. To do that, we’ve decided that we are going to open our doors for freelance projects again for a time.

We are making a block of hours available each month for freelance projects. We specialize in data-centered web applications and mobile app design and development.
