I wrote yesterday about how hearing @garyvee speak at #VaynerWorld had left me pumped up to go out and Crush It. However, beyond hearing the man speaking and going away with a whole new level of passion and enthusiasm there was actually a greater value to me individually. It has nothing to do with the extra books I walked away with, the signed copies or the picture with the man.
It was about the people I met- both on and offline- as a result of the event.
There was a different atmosphere and environment than all the other ‘business’ events I have been to in the past couple of years. This wasn’t about people hawking their business ware but rather about connecting and engaging.
Connecting the dots
Someone like Gary Vaynerchuk acts as a beacon for attracting a concentration of like-minded people in one place.
I met @ChrisMarr101 on Thursday and we just connected instantly and I know we will do some fantastic things together in the not too distant future. Although we live less than half an hour apart it took Gary to fly over from NYC and the two of us to travel down from Scotland to meet and connect.
That is powerful shit!
I am a big fan of serendipitous collisions of random interesting people but they don’t just happen. They come about from putting yourself out there and connecting whether on or off line at a personal level.
If I hadn’t tweeted out on the day and started engaging with Chris we may never started speaking and we would have missed out on a fantastic opportunity.
Obviously social media allows these engagements to scale and it can be very superficial but it genuinely feels that relationships were formed before, during and after the event could last a long time. All being disciples of @garyvee the engagement was high:
Not bad from a couple of hundred people.
My goal for 2014 is to widen my network(ing) away from just business and social media silos and start hanging out in the grey spaces between silos as this is where the interesting people live their lives. (any suggestions will be greatly appreciated)
I’ve created a Twitter list of attendees of VaynerWorld London ‘13 to keep the conversation rolling…give me a shout if you want me to add you to the list.
