The Lightning connector won because it’s genuinely better than the 30-pin. It’s smaller, less delicate, has no “inside” where dust/gunk can build up, and most importantly, it’s reversible! Yes, it took a while for folks to update their phones, but it also coincided with the rise in Bluetooth speakers (for better or for worse), solving the dock problem.

Of course I still use an iPod daily and connect via 30-pin. I also use headphones so I guess I’m odd.
