Right, but the distinction here is between writing in comments sections on blogs and websites — where it’s often addressed to the public at large, or perhaps aimed at the author of the piece but performed, as it were, in front of a crowd — and writing directly, and in confidence, to the author via email. I think Josh’s argument (I agree with him) is that there’s a subtle but valuable difference between those experiences.
