I did that behavioral neuropsychology doctorate thing back in 1975 and presently work on organizational development and team building focused on issues of people and performance. So often these days, young men are holding seminars and workshops to teach trainers and managers “brain science” and how to design training programs. They toss out simple concepts and make simple solutions. YOUR writing points to the amazing complexity of the brain and how it works, and that simple solutions are not generating simple answers.
My work implanted electrodes into the midbrain of pigeons to reward behavior. It worked great. But understanding how all things were connected was impossible then, like it is impossible now. The work you cite, along with work by people like Daniel Kahnemann, give us some insights into functionality, but making that leap to practicality is a difficult if not an impossible challenge regardless of all the technology we have available.
Thanks for demonstrating some simple thoughts around such a wonderful subject as how our brains work. (As I recall, the retina also does some visual processing…)
