I’ve been selling board games for organizational development for 25 years. The flagship game is called Lost Dutchman and the focus in on the tabletop of 6 along with the interactions between the other tabletops as they make decisions to compete or share resources or do the kinds of things that impact a table and impact a room. The use of a board game framework keeps everything level and even and it is the decisions made, not luck, that determines results.
The beauty of board games is that they allow interaction among people. A table of 6 people who have never met are fast into planning and collaborating and communicating and blasting through the potential personal differences in order to get things DONE! And that focus then becomes the leverage point to shift the discussion from the game to the business.
Board games are excellent tools and simple to use. The rules can be simple and the play can be robust. Unlike poker, the results are comparable and the players have to work as a team to get things accomplished. Too much teambuilding is like paintball (compete) or go-karting (compete alone) or stupidly simple problem solving where if one person knows the answer, they drive the group. And what does ski-ball have to do with anything?
