thank you for making me aware of HR 40! I will send a letter to my representative and ask people I know to do the same.

I’ll start by saying reparations is a complex subject that I don’t know much about. I guess I don’t think of it as current day US white people “owing” anything to current day US black people, but I do very much want to right the ongoing system of racial inequality that has provided unearned advantages to white americans, and unearned disadvantages to black americans in myriad ways (this is shown very well in Coates’ essay). I don’t know what that would look like — I would guess it would not take the shape of financial reparations from white US citizens to black US citizens, but maybe start with something like the South African Truth and Reconciliation Commission, and hopefully move toward righting systemic inequalities that remain (how this happens I do not know).
