Thanks for this info, it is very helpful; it does not address the issue that brought me here, however, which is that apparently color “31”, which is used by the default LS_COLORS for pretty much every archive file type (.xz,.war,etc) seems to also map to the background screen color. This means that these files are INVISIBLE regardless of what color you set your background to. The only way to work around this is to change your LS_COLORS variable to set a different color code/background code for every single file type with “;31” in its setting.
