Subtle: An Exploration of Presence and Purpose

Inspired by designers in history who have showcased their philosophies through the construction of chairs, six teams synthesized their design philosophies and translated them into unique chair designs.

The title implies that chairs are an often-overlooked object utilized in daily life, but they have a dependable presence and mindful, purpose-driven design. While their presence is inconspicuous, their impact is significant. They are essential to the rhythm of people’s daily lives, offering dependable and comfortable space.

With only three weeks to ideate, design, and build a chair and exhibit, the six teams collaborated with each other to prepare, create, and curate an experience highlighting their chairs in the best way possible. Placed in the gallery space of Chiquola, our downtown location, each chair prototype was put on display and accompanied by a summary of each design philosophy. The exhibit was one of two gallery shows to end our Annual Art+Design Week (ADWK).

Additionally, students produced exhibit materials including posters and buttons showcasing the chair designs for attendees to collect as ephemera. Each and every part of the exhibition invited viewers to ponder the connections between the teams’ ideals, intentions, and decisions.

List of Chairs

Model FA2

We believe that good design should be long-lasting and intentional, with a focus on improving society through the use of natural elements for functionality.

MODEL FA2

Stuo Set

The philosophy behind this chair design prioritized efficient use of space by incorporating a compact structure, ensuring it can be easily stored and transported. Simultaneously, it emphasizes versatility by integrating multi-functional features that cater to various seating needs, enhancing its adaptability in different contexts.

THE STUO SET

Wunderstuhl

We believe that good design is about building intentional relationships among people. As a result, good design should be inviting and interactive to all. As Dieter Rams said, “design should be aesthetic, unobtrusive, and long-lasting.” These forms should not only integrate seamlessly into its environment, but should also enrich and provide organic opportunity for connection building. We believe that design should inspire curiosity and spark wonder regardless of the audience’s age.

WUNDERSTUHL

Re-Crate

To create a chair using readily available and repurposed materials, promoting resourcefulness and reducing waste. Our goal is to challenge consumerist culture by demonstrating that functional and aesthetically pleasing items can be created from everyday items rather than buying new furniture.

RE-CRATE

Engram

A multi-functional chair that is personal, understandable, and unrestrictive for small spaces to grow relationships and function individually. By targeting young adults between the ages of 20–35 who enjoy reduced and minimal living spaces, our chair accommodates our core desired principles of “less is more” and “a house is a machine for living.”

ENGRAM

The Nomad

We believe good design should be adaptive, and therefore practical, and long-lasting.
