Monsters in the Bed

No lightning flashed that night
Nor no thunder boomed
As my child in wide-eyed disbelief
Crept into my room

“I found myself a monster, daddy
Hiding in the bed
‘I’m not afraid of you’ I lied
‘I don’t care’ he said”

So with a smile and a sigh
I took my child’s hand
And we walked into her room
To see what would be found

I turned on the light and shadows fled
And no monsters appeared
“Look under the covers there”
Said my girl in fear

I grabbed the duvet and with a flourish
Threw it clean away
And underneath, what do you know
Was a monster come to stay

I ask you now sincerely
What would you have done?
The only thing that I could do
Was to turn and run

Out the house and down the street
I thought we had escaped
We could not go on much longer
All our muscles ached

The monster did not chase us
It had no reason to
For when we stopped to rest that night
It was waiting in the room
