Review: Too often: Nothing, is what you are looking at. because of the frequent lack of plates or figures to accompany the descriptions or analyses of the paintings. This is a real shame because the writing is often brilliantly illuminating. This is probably not the fault of the author who deserves 10 stars for his refreshing and insightful explanations that are more helpful than the tortuous maunderings of hundreds of other academic tomes and catalogues. But this is like weighing down a great sprinter (or even a functional Penguin) with wooden clogs. Maybe the benighted publishers upon whom the writer lavishes undeserved praise in his acknowledgements will arrive at some sort of epiphany and re-publish this otherwise excellent book with the pictures that it deserves.

Review: SO DO NOT BUY THE KINDLE VERSION!!!!Gompertz’ text is well written and interesting. I found it a great introduction for someone learning this for the first time. But when it says “See Plate 2” and there’s no link and no Plate 2, it’s kind of hard to understand what he’s saying.I have returned the Kindle version and will probably order the hard copy.

Review: The mediocre two stars has nothing to do with this book’s content — at least the content in regard to what the author is sharing with us. This rating is specifically for the Kindle version of the book. In other Kindle versions of books about art — or at least books that offer illustrations — when the author would reference an illustration or plate in the book, the Kindle version would offer a link to that illustration, graphic, or plate. Not so in this one. In fact, it appears that some of the illustrations and plates referenced aren’t even included in the Kindle version I have. At least I haven’t yet found them. So, while the author discusses the details of a particular work of art and references an illustration or plate, I have no way of knowing where in the book that graphic is located (or even if it exists in the Kindle version I have). In other words, unless I am already familiar with the artwork being discussed, I am left in the dark and at the mercy of the author’s descriptive abilities. This is nothing short of laziness on the part of either the author, the publisher, or the person hired to create the Kindle version of this book. Since I have no access to libraries with the COVID-19 restrictions in place, I can’t go to look at a print version of the book to see if the missing illustrations are actually missing in all editions of this book or if it is, indeed, just the Kindle version. It’s a shame. It’s an interesting book undermined by its own technological omissions. These omissions have made what should be a fun read to be frustrating.

Review: Effective book for someone who wants to begin to understand modern art. I bought this book because for years I had wandered through museums and became curious about modern art pieces. I found that when I took the time to understand a piece and what the artist was saying, I was grateful I did. Hence taking the plunge to educate myself more! This book contributed greatly to my understanding and appreciation of modern art. It was very readable in that the author tells interesting stories about the artists that really pull the reader in, and the chapters are sized that one chapter takes about 25 to 45 minutes to read. The book reads like a story and is very entertaining. I appreciated how well the different art movements were woven into the historical and philosophical contexts.I gave the book 4 stars because I thought there could be two improvements. The first was providing more pictures, even if they are black and white. Many times I had to go back and forth between the computer to look up different pieces in order to follow along. The second suggestion would be to provide a small summary at the end about the movements. I used a highlighter and pad of paper to keep track of characteristics of the different types. There are about 20 chapters and each chapter details a different movement, so it can be useful to keep a reference handy in case the movements start to blend together (or if you’re like me, and you forget some details from a specific type.) However, I found the visual at the beginning and end of the book extremely helpful.

Review: When Gompertz lets his personality show and the anecdotes flow, his prose and this book floats and flies; when he pauses at times for drier academic asides (or to simply fill in a historical gap where he has little interest or passion), it slows. As a whole, this book is a terrific and informative survey of the history of (Western) modern art, albeit with some extremely well-written sections especially at the bookends (Impressionism and the last two decades) and some that are unclear, rushed or dragged out (Dadaism, Fauvism). One shortcoming in this one (and frankly most work): almost no representation by non Western artists (except for political showman Ai Weiwei of course…)

Review: I love it when this former Tate Gallery guru tells it like it is, especially about the incomprehensible art-jargon used by artists and curators talking about art. Very refreshing. The only problem is that he talks about some works that aren’t included in the plates/illustrations given. Then he waxes tedious describing the pieces in detail and loses me. Still, an enjoyable and educational read. Did you know Picasso used collage in fine art first? Me neither.

Review: I give tours at a local art museum and I have read several books on modern/contemporary art to help me explain this genre which many find inaccessible. Most books go into detail about the artist but not really addressing why they are viewed as significant. What I liked about this is that Gompertz talks about the major art movements, how one leads to another and how artists interacted with one another. He includes entertaining stories which illustrate his points. This book should be approached as an ‘overview’ not an in depth study. Recommend it as a good starting point for those who want to learn more on this topic.

Review: Read it for book club. An art book with too few illustrations is not helpful. Makes assumptions that everyone thinks modern art is a scam.
