but also things we can only accomplish collectively (don’t pour lead in the local water supply). Given the damage that can be done by negligence and accidents as well as outright malice, however, I also think of this entire area as akin to disaster preparedness.

I think this is an apt analogy, though maybe doesn’t even go far enough.

Technology has created whole new types of common spaces, and whole new classes of collective problems. On my less hopeful days, I feel like every couple years we create a new problem that will, eventually, dwarf climate change in both complexity and level of existential threat.

Humans have long struggled with managing these classes of problems. We need to get much better at dealing with them, and much faster than we historically have.
