A Teenaged Player

I remember “going steady” in the seventh year of school. We were all just 13 or 14 years old. All the girls were past pubescence, and all the boys were beginning to shave.

I shaved all that year and cut myself both times. When some of us fell in love, we walked our special ones to their locker in school, sometimes carried their books to their class, and hurried back to our class.

We went with each other to the sock hop in the gym. You had to take your shoes off to prevent marring the hardwood surfaces of the court.

We talked about our girlfriends and boyfriends.

When humans fall in love, each can’t keep from mentioning the beloved’s name. Later in maturity, our early experiences in love melted into a past, updated by what we learned was love. It was every aspect of life.

the pursuit of one’s education,

nurturing of good health,
