Peace. Thanks for reading and the response. While I also have heard various stories, I chose to pick a source (no pun intended) that was closer in time to the actual recording of said songs.
I have read Chuck say (in an April 15, 2013, Vibe magazine interview, “Chuck D Breaks Down Public Enemy’s Most Seminal Work”) that the noise from “The Bridge” made the noise of Nations tolerable to the listener. But in that same interview he talks of “I Know You Got Soul” being the driving force behind “Rebel.”mentioning that song was not doing so as a “first” per se, but a motivating factor.
If I had the liberty to interview Hank Shocklee, I’m sure I could get a more definitive answer. Thanks again for reading. Peace.
PS — Ahhh — that is a mistake about “Rebel’s” creation — I will fix that. Thanks.
