Seafood Souq was co-founded by Sean Dennis and Sheikh Fahim al Qasimi based on their mutual love for the ocean and belief in the fact that there had to be a better and more sustainable way forward for the seafood industry leveraging the use of technology. Sustainability is at the core of our beliefs at Seafood Souq.

Friend of the Sea was founded by Paolo Bray, Director of International Programs — Dolphin-Safe Project / Earth Island Institute. The Dolphin-Safe Project saved millions of dolphins from death in tuna fishing nets and started the sustainable seafood movement. Now a project of the World Sustainability Organization, an international trademark registered with humanitarian and environmental conservation mission. …

This event was hosted in line with the United Arab Emirates’ Vision 2021 and Dubai Tourism’s 2025 Strategy; here we shared our innovative and tech smart solutions to help reduce Carbon footprint and wastage of Seafood in the UAE.

Dubai is already the largest seafood consumer per capita globally, being a favourite food group for the health conscious and with an ever growing tourism market feeding this demand also; it’s forecast that by 2030 fish consumption in the UAE will cross the 900,000-tonne barrier. …

Over the past year there’s been an industry wide push for traceability in the Seafood sector for many good intentions; encouraging more sustainable practices, food safety, transparency for buyers/end consumers and to avoid mislabelling to name just a few. (If you haven’t already read it, one of our previous blogs ‘I’ve been eating what?!’ details some of the astounding statistics on these items.)

As one of the most globally traded commodities and with Seafood consumption in the UAE being one of the highest in the world; lack of traceability is a problem worth tackling.

When it comes to Seafood we want to provide traceability all the way to the end consumer.

Which is why we’re pleased to announce the launch of — SFS Trace.

Our first full year working to revolutionise the Seafood industry has been an incredible one.

It’s taken sitting down and pausing for a moment to write this blog to actually realise how far we’ve come in this year alone; what these exciting milestones mean for us going into the New Year and how fortunate we are with our team and Seafood Souq advocates.

From the beginning of the year our Seafood Souq family grew with three additional team members bringing new skills to the group and most importantly sharing the same passion as the co-founders to transform the way the Seafood market operates locally and globally.

We celebrated our first shipment of LIVE Maine Lobster shipped direct from the USA which arrived with 0% mortality (this was a proud moment for our QA team who worked relentlessly on ensuring the cold chain was at the highest standard from Sea to B). We happily tasted this delicious Lobster for our Company BBQ where we celebrated with board members, Investors, Shareholders and the Seafood Souq team. (We can’t wait for the next one for our AGM in February!) …

Early on Friday, 6 September, a batch of salmon arrived in Dubai in the cargo hold of Emirates flight EK 28 from Glasgow. The shipment of Scottish salmon, destined for restaurants and consumers in the UAE, was the first that was being transported for Seafood Souq, a Dubai based start-up working on transparent and efficient sourcing of seafood, by Emirates SkyCargo, the freight division of Emirates. The shipment marked the culmination of a round of discussions and the start of a fruitful partnership between the two companies.

Seafood Souq has created an online B2B marketplace application that helps seafood buyers procure products from all over the world. In addition to streamlining the traditional model of sourcing seafood, the application also allows for improved quality and traceability of the produce being transported. Better information sharing facilitated by the platform means that there are likely to be fewer instances of mis-labelling and expiry of seafood. …

Fish & fish products are some of the most traded food items in the world today;

with the UAE leading regional per capita seafood consumption at 24kg per year — 5kg higher than the global average.

While the GCC fishing industry produces 392,000 tonnes of fish per year, it’s forecast that by 2030 fish consumption in the UAE alone is predicted to cross the 900,000-tonne mark — which makes it clear why Seafood imports hold such an importance to the UAE.

Many of the sought after Seafood products in the UAE are from the top exporters such as China, Norway, Scotland, Sri Lanka, Tunisia and other international seafood hotspots — which is why the Seafood industry in the region is overdue for a fully inclusive marketplace where all sellers and buyers can transact. …
