I totally agree. The author seem to be conflating “regurgitating algorithms” with “using whiteboards”. We use whiteboards heavily in interviews to help the candidate express ideas that are more easily done visually (state diagrams, vector diagrams, linear algebra, etc.). As you mentioned, any coding is very high level and always pseudo code.

A large part of the interview is meant to simulate a meeting with other programmers.
