When mentoring younger developers I often recount the tale of wandering through code I haven’t touched in months to find some logic that is so appalling, so poorly thought out, so undocumented and full of backwards thinking, that I simply must find out what idiot wrote this code so I can give them a talking to.

… and it’s me.
I don’t think we ever get to the point where we write ‘good’ software on the first try. It’s always an evolution of an idea, something bean counters miss when they ask for deadlines and estimates.
