3 Pinot Noirs That Blew Me Away
Pinot Noir is the ultimate varietal. Delicate and soft. Feminine. Extremely difficult but once done right nothing else compares. Last night I went to the Burgundy Lovers Festival at the Vineyard Hotel in Cape Town. At the festival were 40 of the countries top Pinot Noir and Chardonnay Producers. Most of the wines hailed from Hemel en Aarde and Elgin with the odd Stellenbosch Chardonnay and Pinot thrown in the mix.
My 3 favorite Pinot Noirs from the evening were:
1. Newton Johnson Family Vineyards Pinot Noir 2014
Always love this wine and the 2014 delivers! Great balance of fruit with a dried herbaceous undertone. Love this wine.
2. Crystallum Peter Max. 2014
Crafted from 4 separate vineyard sites: 3 in Hemel Aarde, 1 in Walker Bay and one secret spot. Floral and fruity. Young but only going to get better with age.
3. Shannon Vineyards Pinot Noir 2013
First time I have ever tasted wine from Shannon. Awesome! Nice dry Pinot Noir with enough fruit to make you go back for the second glass. Was really impressed.
