I wonder if this article isn’t a slight oversimplification of the issue. There are many counties with white people which are very poor — do you think the inhabitants of those countries should never be able to travel because they were born in Ukraine not in the USA? What about religious pilgrimages? Are those ok because the person is relying on the grace of God, not of strangers? Or is a spiritual voyage ok only if it’s in the name of one of the accepted mainstream religions and not if an individual is attempting to follow their own path?
Don’t get me wrong — I think there’s something terribly wrong with people from a rich country who have had many opportunities entering another country and begging money from people who’ve had fewer, simply in order to short-circuit the hard work typically required to travel, but painting all ‘begpackers’ with this same brush does not do any good.
