One of my friends recently asked me to summarize everything I know about product management into three easy concepts. I started thinking about the ridiculous amount of information that I learned in the past few weeks. How to write a PRD, how to do customer interviews, how to create mockups etc… Eventually, I was able to create a short list of everything you need to know to be a PM. As long as you have these three things, you will do fine (this is basically the MVP of being a product manager).

  1. Step into your customers shoes — Are you able to identify with the customer? Can you put yourself in their shoes and think of their needs?
  2. Execute well — How do you test your product? Do you know what metrics to look at? How do you define success?
  3. Leadership skills — Can you present well? Can you lead a team without authority? Are you able to share your vision with your peers?

As long as you are able to learn these three skills, you will do well as a product manager. Good luck!

Looking forward to the future, the possibilities are endless.
