College 101, How to Jump a Car.

College is a huge adventure in learning, and not just in the classroom. Learning how to cook, work, pay bills and deal with unexpected inconveniences run hand in hand with earning a degree. So when most of your colleagues and friends are driving cars with over two hundred thousand miles, knowing how to jump a car with a dead battery can come in handy.

*Rule one, always be prepared. Nothing is more important then having water in your vehicle at all times. This is incase your car dies and it will be awhile before someone can help or reach you. Never expect others to have jumper cables, so buy them yourself because they can be the most valuable inexpensive item in your vehicle.

*Electricity is dangerous so always be careful when working with car batteries. Start with both vehicles off. This includes lights. Never grab the jump cables by the metal clips, always grab the rubber. This will keep you grounded and safe.

* Learning colors in preschool has never been more important then now. Match the red clip with the red metal connector on the battery and then the black clip on the black connector. Do this for both cars.

*Turn on the good car first and let it run for a few minutes before attempting to start the dead car, this allows the dead battery to warm up. Slight revving of the engine will speed the process up a bit.

*After the few minutes are up attemp to turn the dead car on. If it works rev the engine a few times to engage the alternator and charge the battery and connect it back to cars engine. Let idle for thirty minutes if you are not going anywhere, if you are then you are good to go. If it does not work the first time stop and let it charge for a few more minutes. If it continues to not start then call for professional help, you might have more wrong then just a dead battery.

*Assuming your car has started be extra cautious taking off the jumper cables. Do Not Turn Your Car Off to do this. Lastly always drive safely.

Pro Tip: If you let your car sit for long periods over two weeks go out and let it run for half an hour, this will recharge the battery and lessen the chance that your car will be dead.
