While I enjoyed the film, the ending, unfortunately, felt contrived, so much so that it pulled me straight out of the film. I want a fairy tale ending as much as anyone else, but this one almost felt like, “Well, we kinda wrote ourselves into a corner, didnt we.”
White we certainly dont need the bathos of Boys in the Band, there are other gay male films that are starting to slip into obscurity: My Beautiful Laundrette, Jeffrey, and Trick all almost immediately leap to mind. People act like Love, Simon and Call Me (which, I’m sorry but, I consider manipulative bathos in the Boys in the Band mode) are some kind of breakout moment for LGBT films. If anything, they were good timing. That is not to detract from Simon’s success, just to say that, look, we’ve had films like this all along. Was anyone watching?
