Bernie Sanders was NOT a “far left” candidate. He is a social liberal (democratic socialist) and that has, historically, been considered a center left political position. The reason he seemed so far to the left compared with the rest of the candidates is because the Democrat party itself has been steadily pulled to the right for the past 35 years or so. Neoliberal supply side economic policies, pandering to Wall Street and the subsequent bailouts, support for war (Clinton regrettably voted for the Iraq war), Clinton being against gay marriage before she was for it and Clinton’s stance against a single payer healthcare system. Those have never been progressive, social liberal stances. The policies that Hillary Clinton, and former President Bill Clinton supported, could only be considered center right at best. Former President Obama was a centrist.
